Jemenieten onverschillig over corona: 'Geen enkele ziekte maakt mij bang'
Afgelopen week zijn er voor het eerst een handjevol coronabesmettingen bevestigd in de Jemenitische havenstad Aden. Er is grote kans dat het coronavirus zich ongemerkt al veel verder door het land heeft verspreid. De gezondheidszorg ligt in puin en de testcapaciteit is minimaal. Hoe moet het verder in dit land waar eerder ziektes als cholera en dengue zich als een razende konden verspreiden?
De mensen op straat in Aden zijn onverschillig: "We horen wel het een en ander over die corona maar volgens mij is het een buitenlandse ziekte," zegt een man in een drukke winkelstraat in Aden. Het vliegveld werd half maart gesloten maar voor die tijd arriveerden er nog regelmatig vluchten uit bijvoorbeeld Egypte. Het is goed denkbaar dat het coronavirus op die manier het land binnen is geslopen.
Ook op de qatmarkt in Aden lijkt men zich nog nergens druk over te maken. Koopmannen maken een praatje en verkopen de licht verdovende, honger stillende bladeren die door veel Jemenieten dagelijks worden gekauwd. "Geen enkele ziekte maakt mij bang, we komen gewoon elke dag naar de markt en er is hier niets aan de hand," zegt een koopman. "Dit is bovendien een goed medicijn tegen corona," vervolgt hij terwijl een pakketje qatbladeren omhoog houdt. "Dit is het middel tegen welke ziekte dan ook."
De beroemde Jemenitische qatsessies waar iedereen gezellig samenkomt om te kauwen en te kletsen gaan gewoon door. "We hebben geen elektriciteit en geen stromend water. We hebben niet genoeg te eten en te weinig werk. Een keer in de zes maanden krijgen we ons salaris. We leven maar zijn eigenlijk al dood," vervolgt de koopman.
Zorgen in Jemen over eerste coronabesmettingen
Officieel is er een lockdown in Aden maar daar is vrij weinig van te merken. Hier geen anderhalve meter afstand of mondkapjes. De markten en straten zijn vol. Ook is er nauwelijks voorlichting; weinig mensen zien het nut van coronamaatregelen. Wel zijn moskeeën, scholen en universiteiten gesloten, maar thuiszitten is niet voor iedereen weggelegd. "Als ik niet werk, heb ik geen eten. Dus ik kan kiezen: thuiszitten en sterven van de honger of naar werk gaan en een risico lopen; die keus is voor mij snel gemaakt," zegt een inwoner van Aden.
Na vijf jaar oorlog hebben ze hier overduidelijk iets anders aan hun hoofd dan een onzichtbaar virus. Veel mensen zeggen dat ze zich niet kunnen voorstellen dat hun leven nog moeilijker zal worden dan het nu is. Miljoenen Jemenieten hebben te maken met hongersnood, de meesten hebben nauwelijks toegang tot behoorlijke medische zorg.
Dokter Marwan Al Shargbi, hoofd van het farmaceutische hoofdkantoor van Aden maakt zich zorgen. Hij ziet een enorme ramp op zich afkomen. "We hebben een tekort aan alles. We hebben bij ministeries gebedeld, brieven geschreven, maar niemand in Jemen heeft genoeg spullen om op een verantwoorde manier met een coronacrisis om te kunnen gaan," zegt hij.
Paniek in het ziekenhuis
Dokter Ramzy Naji, directeur van het Al-Reyadah ziekenhuis in Aden, vertelt dat het medisch personeel bezorgd is omdat ze zo weinig beschermende materialen hebben. "Laatst hadden we hier een patiënt met coronasymptomen. Er was direct paniek in het ziekenhuis, sommige werknemers zijn uit angst zelfs naar huis gegaan," zegt hij. Uiteindelijk bleek het geen corona te zijn. Constant worden patiënten met corona-achtige klachten geweigerd in ziekenhuizen. "Natuurlijk is dat niet goed. Maar we hebben meer hulp nodig om ermee om te kunnen gaan."
Dokter Naji vertelt dat patiënten met astmaklachten in Aden massaal geweigerd zijn. Ook zijn er momenteel, als gevolg van zware overstromingen, nog meer mensen met dengue, waarvan de symptomen op corona lijken. Minstens zes kinderen en tientallen volwassenen zijn thuis overleden omdat ze, door angst voor corona, in geen enkel ziekenhuis terecht konden.
Het is nu afwachten hoe snel het hier de komende weken zal gaan nu het zwaar gehavende land een heel andere strijd te wachten staat. Veel Jemenieten hebben geen enkel vertrouwen in hun leiders en lijken het gevoel te hebben dat alleen god ze te hulp zal komen.
"Wij hebben de mogelijkheden niet om dit te bestrijden," zegt een man die met zijn kindje over straat loopt. "Wij zijn niet zoals andere landen in de wereld die de capaciteit hebben om met zo'n crisis om te gaan. Wie je het ook vraagt zal je hetzelfde antwoord geven: 'wij vertrouwen op god'. God zal ons behoeden en beschermen in deze crisis. Want anders gaan we zeer donkere dagen tegemoet."

Jemenieten onverschillig over corona: 'Geen enkele ziekte maakt mij bang'

Afgelopen week zijn er voor het eerst een handjevol coronabesmettingen bevestigd in de Jemenitische havenstad Aden. Er is grote kans dat het coronavirus zich ongemerkt al veel verder door het land heeft verspreid. De gezondheidszorg ligt in puin en de testcapaciteit is minimaal. Hoe moet het verder in dit land waar eerder ziektes als cholera en dengue zich als een razende konden verspreiden?
De mensen op straat in Aden zijn onverschillig: "We horen wel het een en ander over die corona maar volgens mij is het een buitenlandse ziekte," zegt een man in een drukke winkelstraat in Aden. Het vliegveld werd half maart gesloten maar voor die tijd arriveerden er nog regelmatig vluchten uit bijvoorbeeld Egypte. Het is goed denkbaar dat het coronavirus op die manier het land binnen is geslopen.
Ook op de qatmarkt in Aden lijkt men zich nog nergens druk over te maken. Koopmannen maken een praatje en verkopen de licht verdovende, honger stillende bladeren die door veel Jemenieten dagelijks worden gekauwd. "Geen enkele ziekte maakt mij bang, we komen gewoon elke dag naar de markt en er is hier niets aan de hand," zegt een koopman. "Dit is bovendien een goed medicijn tegen corona," vervolgt hij terwijl een pakketje qatbladeren omhoog houdt. "Dit is het middel tegen welke ziekte dan ook."
De beroemde Jemenitische qatsessies waar iedereen gezellig samenkomt om te kauwen en te kletsen gaan gewoon door. "We hebben geen elektriciteit en geen stromend water. We hebben niet genoeg te eten en te weinig werk. Een keer in de zes maanden krijgen we ons salaris. We leven maar zijn eigenlijk al dood," vervolgt de koopman.

Zorgen in Jemen over eerste coronabesmettingen
Officieel is er een lockdown in Aden maar daar is vrij weinig van te merken. Hier geen anderhalve meter afstand of mondkapjes. De markten en straten zijn vol. Ook is er nauwelijks voorlichting; weinig mensen zien het nut van coronamaatregelen. Wel zijn moskeeën, scholen en universiteiten gesloten, maar thuiszitten is niet voor iedereen weggelegd. "Als ik niet werk, heb ik geen eten. Dus ik kan kiezen: thuiszitten en sterven van de honger of naar werk gaan en een risico lopen; die keus is voor mij snel gemaakt," zegt een inwoner van Aden.
Na vijf jaar oorlog hebben ze hier overduidelijk iets anders aan hun hoofd dan een onzichtbaar virus. Veel mensen zeggen dat ze zich niet kunnen voorstellen dat hun leven nog moeilijker zal worden dan het nu is. Miljoenen Jemenieten hebben te maken met hongersnood, de meesten hebben nauwelijks toegang tot behoorlijke medische zorg.
Dokter Marwan Al Shargbi, hoofd van het farmaceutische hoofdkantoor van Aden maakt zich zorgen. Hij ziet een enorme ramp op zich afkomen. "We hebben een tekort aan alles. We hebben bij ministeries gebedeld, brieven geschreven, maar niemand in Jemen heeft genoeg spullen om op een verantwoorde manier met een coronacrisis om te kunnen gaan," zegt hij.
Paniek in het ziekenhuis
Dokter Ramzy Naji, directeur van het Al-Reyadah ziekenhuis in Aden, vertelt dat het medisch personeel bezorgd is omdat ze zo weinig beschermende materialen hebben. "Laatst hadden we hier een patiënt met coronasymptomen. Er was direct paniek in het ziekenhuis, sommige werknemers zijn uit angst zelfs naar huis gegaan," zegt hij. Uiteindelijk bleek het geen corona te zijn. Constant worden patiënten met corona-achtige klachten geweigerd in ziekenhuizen. "Natuurlijk is dat niet goed. Maar we hebben meer hulp nodig om ermee om te kunnen gaan."
Dokter Naji vertelt dat patiënten met astmaklachten in Aden massaal geweigerd zijn. Ook zijn er momenteel, als gevolg van zware overstromingen, nog meer mensen met dengue, waarvan de symptomen op corona lijken. Minstens zes kinderen en tientallen volwassenen zijn thuis overleden omdat ze, door angst voor corona, in geen enkel ziekenhuis terecht konden.
Het is nu afwachten hoe snel het hier de komende weken zal gaan nu het zwaar gehavende land een heel andere strijd te wachten staat. Veel Jemenieten hebben geen enkel vertrouwen in hun leiders en lijken het gevoel te hebben dat alleen god ze te hulp zal komen.
"Wij hebben de mogelijkheden niet om dit te bestrijden," zegt een man die met zijn kindje over straat loopt. "Wij zijn niet zoals andere landen in de wereld die de capaciteit hebben om met zo'n crisis om te gaan. Wie je het ook vraagt zal je hetzelfde antwoord geven: 'wij vertrouwen op god'. God zal ons behoeden en beschermen in deze crisis. Want anders gaan we zeer donkere dagen tegemoet."
